Adimec Introduces New Ruby Camera Lens Assembly (CLA) for X-Ray Imaging
Adimec has unveiled its new Ruby CLA, designed specifically for X-ray imaging applications. This innovative solution delivers full digital real-time 1k2 resolution at 30fps, making it ideal for Image Intensifier-based medical X-ray systems. The announcement marks the first installment of a three-part series exploring how RUBY addresses key challenges in fluoroscopy C-arm systems by reducing costs (Part 1), enhancing image quality (Part 2), and simplifying installation and service (Part 3).
Key Features of the RUBY CLA
Unlike traditional systems that rely on Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) technology, the Ruby CLA employs a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor. This shift eliminates moving iris components entirely, replacing them with Adimec’s patented digital iris concept. The result is a system with no moving parts—a critical advantage for reliability and maintenance.
The absence of mechanical movement significantly lowers maintenance costs while improving image sharpness and overall system dependability. CMOS sensors are particularly effective in low-light conditions, making this technology well-suited for radiography applications, which often require high sensitivity despite limited illumination.
Cost and Reliability Benefits
Adimec claims that the Ruby CLA can reduce the bill-of-materials (BOM) by up to 50% compared to conventional CCD-based systems. Despite its lower initial cost—roughly equivalent to a system offering only 512×2 resolution—the Ruby CLA does not sacrifice performance, providing full 1k2 resolution and image quality.
Furthermore, the lack of wear-prone components means minimal maintenance is required beyond standard system upkeep. With an estimated lifetime of 10 years and an MTBF exceeding 60 system years (calculated according to MIL specifications), RUBY delivers exceptional reliability. Typical failure rates for systems with moving parts can reach up to 8% annually, translating to a lower MTBF estimate of just over 12 system years between failures. In contrast, the Ruby CLA maintains operational integrity in most cases and comes equipped with built-in diagnostics for rare issues.
Parting Thoughts: Performance Meets Affordability
In essence, Adimec’s RUBY CLA offers comparable or superior performance to traditional CCD-based X-ray imagers at a lower cost—both upfront and over the device’s lifespan. This combination of improved reliability, reduced maintenance needs, and cost-effectiveness positions the Ruby CLA as an ideal solution for medical imaging systems requiring high-quality digital real-time imaging in demanding environments.
