In April 2013, CoaXPress Version 1.1 was released, bringing enhanced features and improved specifications to the machine vision industry. This update builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, addressing ambiguities and streamlining implementation for developers.

Key Changes from Version 1.0

Version 1.1 resolves several areas that were previously unclear or ambiguous in v1.0. Notable changes include:

  • Terminology Updates:

    • The term “Link” has been replaced with “Connection”. In v1.0, a single coax cable was referred to as a “Link”, while multiple connections (including extensions) formed the complete system communication path.
    • This renaming clarifies roles and avoids confusion caused by differing terminology across various standards.

  • GenICam Alignment: Version 1.1 has been updated to align with the latest GenICam standards, improving integration with other industrial interfaces.

Implementation Improvements

The implementation of CoaXPress v1.1 incorporates several simplifications:

  • The packet priority scheme has been optimized for better system performance.
    • Physical layer requirements have been slightly relaxed compared to v1.0 specifications (though approved earlier). This ensures backward compatibility: existing v1.0 products automatically meet the updated requirements without modification.

New Features

Two major additions in Version 1.1:

  • Connectors:

    • Supports DIN connectors alongside standard BNC connectors.
    • These new multi-pin connectors facilitate higher bandwidth and multiple camera integration, aligning with future CXP speed increases beyond current 6.25 Gbps.

  • Discovery Procedure:

    • The system now requires explicit confirmation before activating high-speed connections (see v1.1 §10.1.4).

Future Developments

Version 1.2 is scheduled for release in Q4 2014, promising further enhancements:

  • Faster transmission speeds per cable (up to 12 Gbps)
    • Additional GenICam updates and improved features
