Industrial CMOS Image Sensors: More Than Just Connecting a Camera
Despite how advanced today’s industrial CMOS image sensors have become, it might seem like connecting an image sensor directly to an interface would suffice for building a camera.
Thankfully, this is not the case! The following images illustrate two different IMX174 sensor-based cameras capturing the same scene. On the left are Adimec camera images from the top row, while the second row highlights differences when zooming into specific areas of the scene.
First Set: Obvious Color Differences
In the first set, color discrepancies are clearly visible. While these might not lead to critical mistakes in decision-making situations if colors are accurately represented, they still highlight potential issues.
Second Set: Image Quality and Artifacts
The second set presents a clearer comparison of image quality. The camera from a competitor suffers from poor sharpness, making text unreadable and chart lines indistinct. Additionally, there are noticeable false color artifacts that further degrade usability for precise measurements or decision-making tasks.

What Makes the Difference in Cameras with the Same Sensor?
Even though high-quality image sensors like the IMX174 provide a strong starting point, they still require substantial image processing to perform optimally. The way this processing is implemented can dramatically alter the final image quality.
For instance, color processing and de-bayering rely on precise color matrix calibration, interpolation techniques, and accurate white balance settings. These elements often go beyond basic textbook methods—years of experience combined with specialized real-time algorithms are essential for optimal results. Adimec even calibrates its color processing over temperature to ensure consistent performance under varying conditions.
Other critical processes include defect pixel correction, uniformity adjustments (column, row, and shading), and linearity calibration—all performed to maximize image quality and fully leverage the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the sensor.
Why Expertise Matters
A well-implemented real-time processing system is crucial for reliable decision-making. Without years of tuning and refinement, even the best sensors cannot deliver their full potential in demanding applications.
