CoaXPress 2.0: The Next Evolution in Vision Interface Standards
The final draft of the CoaXPress 2.0 standard is nearly complete and is expected to be finalized by next year’s first quarter. Following its release as a candidate during the spring International Vision Standards Meeting (IVSM), formal voting will commence, paving the way for certified products anticipated toward the end of 2017.
The Role of IVSM in Standard Development
Twice yearly, the International Vision Standards Meeting brings together Working Groups from major vision standards—CoaXPress, USB3 Vision, Camera Link, Camera Link HS, and GigE Vision—to collaborate on next-generation standards. This meeting is supported by five industry associations: AIA, EMVA, JIIA, VDMA, and CMVU.
Adimec’s Contribution to Standards
Adimec actively participates in standardization efforts, with a primary focus on the CoaXPress interface due to its advantages. However, the company also contributes to Camera Link and GenICam committees and is a member of the GigE Vision Working Group. Following last month’s IVSM meeting—an ideal moment for an update—the growing attention for CoaXPress continues to rise.
Key Developments in CoaXPress
At the most recent standards meeting, approximately 80 companies attended, with about 40 actively engaged or contributing to CoaXPress—nearly double the participation from the previous year.
CoaXPress 2.0: Enhanced Performance and Flexibility
The upcoming CoaXPress 2.0 standard will significantly boost data transfer rates, offering up to 12.5 Gbit/s per connection alongside backward compatibility with existing 6.25 Gbit/s speeds. This improvement enables higher frame rates or resolutions while reducing system costs through more flexible cabling and fewer frame grabbers.
Additional enhancements include features like data striping, increased uplink bandwidth, and forward error correction to improve reliability. Future iterations may also explore optical interfaces for even greater scalability.
Ensuring Interoperability
As CoaXPress adoption grows, plans are advancing to enhance compliance testing tools, guaranteeing seamless interoperability between products from different manufacturers.
A Bright Outlook for CoaXPress
The momentum behind CoaXPress continues to accelerate, with certified products featuring the 12.5 Gbit/s standard expected by year-end 2017. This next-generation interface promises greater flexibility and efficiency for developers worldwide.
