Collaboration for Advanced Parcel Sorting
In partnership with Bern University of Applied Science and innovation specialist CSEM, Prolistic has developed a cutting-edge automatic induction system for their flexible parcel sorting solution, eSorter. This system efficiently handles incoming parcels by dumping them onto a conveyor belt. A sophisticated 3D vision setup combined with neural networks identifies each package’s location. Based on this data, a robotic arm picks and properly positions every item on the output conveyor.
Stable Real-Time 3D Measurement
The surge in e-commerce necessitates automated parcel processing solutions. Currently, most high-speed sorters rely on manual labor for final handling—this approach is inefficient, repetitive, and physically taxing.
System Overview
Our architecture employs modular design principles to support multiple robotic units tailored to throughput requirements. Inter-module communication utilizes gRPC/protobuf protocols. The CSEM-developed Visard platform manages the user interface while orchestrating all system operations. A 3D-printed vacuum gripper with multi-zone suction features integrated sealing foam and blow-off capabilities allows handling parcels of varying dimensions, weights, and materials.
Key Capabilities
- Handles packages up to 10 kg (400 x 300 x 200 mm³)
- Compatible with any packaging material
- Sorts at least 4000 items per hour
- Achieves ±5 mm positioning accuracy and ±20° orientation tolerance
- Reads address labels
Advanced Vision Technology
The eSorter integrates a Nerian stereo vision system (Karmin3 camera + SceneScan Pro sensor) with supplementary LED projector functionality. This setup delivers up to 135 fps performance or handles high-resolution data streams.
Neural Network Implementation
Training employs photorealistic synthetic datasets supplemented by real-world examples, bridging the gap between simulation and actual operation. The system calculates precise bounding box coordinates for robotic guidance.
Nerian SceneScan Pro Capabilities
This versatile 3D vision sensor connects to either Karmin3 cameras or Alvium USB3 cameras, offering:
- Ultra-fast processing (up to 135 fps)
- High-density depth mapping (~43M points/sec)
- Direct Ethernet data transmission
Enhanced Performance Features
Our solution delivers reliable operation even in challenging environments through automatic calibration and robust design. Key strengths include:
- Consistent performance under varying light conditions (indoors/outdoors)
- Adaptive capabilities for diverse surface types
- Integration flexibility with peripheral equipment
