Allied Vision Expands Alvium USB Camera Series with Faster Sony IMX Sensors
On June 21, 2022, Allied Vision announced the expansion of its Alvium USB camera series with two new models—Alvium 1800 U-052 and Alvium 1800 U-291. These cameras feature advanced Sony third-generation IMX CMOS sensors equipped with Pregius S global shutter technology, designed for high-speed imaging applications.
Key Features of the New Models
Alvium 1800 U-052
This model uses the Sony IMX426 sensor, which provides a resolution of 0.5 megapixel and supports up to 626 frames per second (fps) when operating at an 8-bit depth. The large pixel size of 9 µm × 9 µm enhances sensitivity, making it ideal for low-light conditions.
Alvium 1800 U-291
Equipped with the Sony IMX421 sensor, this camera offers a resolution of approximately 2.8 megapixels and achieves up to 141 fps in 8-bit mode. Its compact sensor size (2/3”) makes it suitable for applications requiring high-speed imaging without sacrificing detail.
ADC Bit Depth Selection
The new Alvium models include an innovative ADC selection feature, allowing users to optimize performance based on their needs. By choosing between bit depths of 12bpp, 10bpp, or 8bpp, the frame rate can be significantly increased—for instance, the Alvium 1800 U-052 reaches up to 626 fps at an 8-bit depth compared to 343 fps in 12-bit mode. This flexibility ensures faster data acquisition for specific tasks.
Applications
These high-speed USB cameras are tailored for factory automation and inspection systems involving fast-moving objects, such as material sorting, beverage bottle inspection, or intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Their compact design and advanced sensor technology make them versatile tools for machine vision professionals.

Additional Features
All Alvium 1800 U cameras also boast enhanced software features, including an adaptive convolution filter with noise reduction capabilities. This tool helps reduce image noise while preserving edges and corners—a critical function for edge detection tasks. Users can even define custom filters to achieve effects like edge enhancement or specific image deformations.
Enhanced Performance
Additional upgrades include user-configurable camera control sets (up to 77 features) and SNFC-compliant Timer Control, enabling precise synchronization of lighting and imaging processes. These features streamline workflows and improve efficiency in dynamic environments.
Short Delivery Times
Allied Vision ensures quick delivery times for these models, providing an advantage amid ongoing supply shortages on the market. The Alvium USB cameras’ reliance on Sony IMX sensors guarantees reliable performance even in competitive hardware markets.
