With the latest firmware update for all Alvium cameras, Allied Vision is opening up direct access to GenICam features from MIPI CSI-2 cameras. The company has also released a new version of its Software Development Kit (SDK), Vimba 6.0, which includes a new CSI-2 Transport Layer and support for the GenICam standard on CSI-2 interfaces.

This enhanced functionality allows users to utilize Alvium CSI-2 cameras with the Vimba SDK and access a wide range of standard GenICam features. The integration combines the advantages of embedded systems (such as size, weight, and power efficiency) with advanced machine vision capabilities.

Easy Migration

Existing applications built for GenICam using USB cameras can now be migrated to CSI-2 cameras more easily. Thanks to the GenICam support for MIPI CSI-2, users can access all Standard Features Naming Convention (SFNC) features available in Alvium USB3 cameras via CSI-2 models. This makes it easier to prototype with a USB camera and then replace it with a CSI-2 model once development is complete.

Allied Vision has started this expansion by supporting specific Alvium 1800 C models, including the Sony IMX global shutter variants (1800 C-507, 1800 C-511, 1800 C-1236) and Starvis rolling shutter variant (1800 C-2050), along with the OnSemi AR0521 Sensor model (1800 C-500). These models are officially validated for use with GenICam CSI-2.

Embedded Benefits

CSI-2 is a streamlined protocol, resulting in lower host system CPU overhead and reduced processing times. Compared to USB cameras, the CPU load can be decreased by up to 70%, making CSI-2 cameras ideal for embedded systems.

The new Alvium CSI-2 driver version (3.0.0) supports NVIDIA Jetson platforms like Xavier NX and AGX Xavier running JetPack 4.5.1. A beta driver compatible with the newer JetPack 4.6.1 is already available on GitHub, offering users access to machine learning and AI capabilities.

Users can control CSI-2 cameras through either Vimba 6.0 or any other GenICam-compliant third-party software. This simplifies development for vision system designers who may not be familiar with V4L2 protocols.

New Features

The latest firmware introduces several enhancements across all Alvium 1800 C models using GenICam CSI-2, including the Alvium USB3 1800 U cameras:

  • 5x5 Convolution Filter: This adaptive noise reduction filter preserves edges and corners while reducing image noise. Users can also define custom filters for specific effects.
  • ADC Selection: By choosing between different bit depths (8–12), users can increase frame rates significantly depending on the sensor used.
  • User Sets: Up to four individual sets plus a default configuration are now available, enabling quick restoration of factory settings or application-specific configurations.
  • Timer Control: This feature allows precise synchronization with illumination devices during image acquisition for applications requiring timed exposure timing.
