Allied Vision Joins NVIDIA Jetson Ecosystem

Camera manufacturer and image processing expert Allied Vision announced it has become an official member of the NVIDIA Jetson ecosystem, providing developers working on these powerful AI embedded computing systems with access to Allied Vision camera modules for industrial image processing. With the release of the Vimba MIPI CSI-2 driver, Allied Vision’s open-source driver now supports NVIDIA’s Jetson TX2 System-on-Module (SoM) with Linux for Tegra, and is available on GitHub.

One Vimba MIPI CSI-2 Driver for All

The Alvium camera series combines embedded sensor modules with industrial camera performance, offering extensive functions for image correction and optimization, a wide selection of cutting-edge sensors, intelligent energy management, and compact cost-effective design. This opens up new possibilities for designing AI-enabled embedded systems.

The Vimba driver supports all current and future Alvium camera modules with MIPI CSI-2 interface, regardless of the sensor used. If an application system is developed based on the Jetson platform, this same driver can be reused even if a different resolution sensor module is chosen later. This makes development easier, facilitates prototyping, and simplifies component replacement.

Relieving Embedded Processors

The Alvium camera features an integrated Image Signal Processor (ISP) along with comprehensive image processing libraries (IPL), making it capable of handling image processing tasks directly via the Video4Linux interface. By doing so, developers can offload internal ISP workloads from Jetson TX2 boards.

Furthermore, additional image processing tasks that typically require GPU resources can also be performed by the camera itself. This frees up computing capacity and speed for demanding applications such as scientific analysis, new internet service development, autonomous vehicles, or other AI projects.

Ecosystem Collaboration

“By offering the Vimba MIPI CSI-2 Driver for NVIDIA Jetson along with adapter boards,” said Mark Schenk, Software Product Manager at Allied Vision, “system designers now have a powerful SoM combined with user-friendly software and an adaptable camera model to implement advanced technological applications.”

“Murali Gopalakrishna, Head of Product Management for Autonomous Machines at NVIDIA, added: ‘We welcome Allied Vision as a new member of the NVIDIA ecosystem. The Alvium camera series provides users on the Jetson platform unprecedented opportunities to bring AI capabilities closer to devices.’”

This collaboration is just beginning. Allied Vision plans to release additional drivers supporting other NVIDIA Jetson products like Jetson AGX Xavier and Jetson Nano soon.

“We are proud to be part of this ecosystem,” concluded Sebastian Günther, Embedded Strategy Manager at Allied Vision, “and look forward to expanding our Jetson platform offerings to provide developers with new machine vision opportunities.”
