The New Baumer Innovation Center in Frauenfeld
The upcoming R&D center in Frauenfeld (Switzerland) is set to become a hub for innovative sensor solutions, with teams beginning work there by late summer 2023. This facility represents another significant investment from the Baumer Group—a company focused on smart sensors for factory and process automation—which has spent 20 million Swiss francs building this modern research space at its headquarters.
Baumer continues to grow steadily. The group specializes in intelligent sensor solutions, supporting industrial operations worldwide. This new center is part of a series of strategic investments aimed at boosting innovation over recent years; the High-Tech Center in Stockach (opened in 2018) was the first step.
Location Strength: A Key Advantage for Innovation
Dr. Oliver Vietze, CEO of Baumer, expressed enthusiasm about the new building, which will offer approximately 5,000 square meters of modern office space for around 120 employees. “The expansion at headquarters strengthens our capacity to drive innovation,” he stated during the groundbreaking ceremony on March 29th.
For decades, Baumer has benefited from its strategic location near top-tier institutions such as ETH Zurich and the University of Constance—plus other leading science universities in eastern Switzerland. This proximity fuels ongoing collaboration with academic partners. Now, Vietze noted, “We are further expanding this advantageous position.” The move-in date for the teams is late summer 2023.
Sustainability Features: Energy Efficiency Meets Green Technology
Energy efficiency and climate goals form a core aspect of the new center’s design. Driven by its commitment to CO₂ neutrality, Baumer aims to showcase these principles through this project, particularly in terms of environmental responsibility.
The building incorporates an advanced energy facade with integrated solar panels for electricity generation. Additionally, ground-source probes coupled with heat pumps will handle both heating during winter and cooling in summer. These systems align with the company’s “Baumer Blue” sustainability initiative, which also includes sourcing exclusively from Swiss hydropower—ensuring a clean and CO₂-neutral supply chain.
