Sensor for Air and Gas Bubble Detection: A Revolutionary Solution from Baumer
The PAD20 sensor series represents an innovative breakthrough in addressing a previously unsolved challenge: detecting air and gas bubbles within process media. Awarded the Dairy Technology Prize 2021 in the Environment and Sustainability category, this technology not only identifies even minute air and gas inclusions but also prevents pumps from running dry—eliminating associated downtime.
This sensor has proven effective across numerous field applications, consistently improving plant efficiency while ensuring maximum process reliability and quality.
Innovation for Diverse Industrial and Hygiene Applications
Julian Budde, Baumer’s product manager for process sensors, highlighted the success of this technology at the SPS Trade Show: “Air and gas inclusions in process media lead to plant downtime, maintenance effort, and reduced product quality. Such challenges affect varied industries significantly. The intelligent detection of these inclusions marks a smart Baumer solution.”
The PAD20’s innovative operating principle makes it ideal for monitoring heating and cooling systems in mechanical engineering applications. By identifying air and gas bubbles that compromise equipment performance directly, the sensor simultaneously enhances system efficiency through process stabilization.
Originally developed for an F&B industry client seeking to prevent installations from running dry during container exchanges while maximizing resource utilization—particularly ensuring complete drainage of fruit concentrate containers—the PAD20 has expanded its applicability beyond this initial use case. It now detects even minute air and gas bubbles in dosing operations, enabling optimal timing for container changes.
This sensor operates effectively across various media as long as the liquid’s dielectric constant exceeds 1.5—offering maximum flexibility. Users can individually define two switching ranges to precisely adapt the sensor to specific process requirements according to their needs.
“The smart PAD20 principle provides users with ‘high process and product quality across a wide application spectrum,’” notes Julian Budde, underscoring its versatility for diverse applications.
