Applications Of Polarization Cameras In Industrial Quality Control And Surface Inspection
Polarization cameras from the CX series are ideal for quality control in glass production, manufacturing carbon fiber materials, or inspecting reflective surfaces.
Ever tried looking at a water surface on a sunny day? The reflection is so intense you have to squint. But with polarized sunglasses, those reflections vanish instantly—magic! That’s why photographers love using polarization filters to eliminate glare from water, glass, or metal for sharper images with higher contrast.
This everyday trick also works wonders in industrial applications. However, it only became practical recently because before then, there were no cameras or expertise on polarization imaging technology.
Last year marked a game-changer: Sony introduced the IMX250MZR image sensor featuring built-in polarization filters. This innovation paved the way for devices like Baumer’s CX cameras. At the same time, Fraunhofer Institute IIS has been researching advanced imaging techniques for over two decades and has successfully deployed pilot projects in polarization technology with numerous companies. Last year, Baumer and Fraunhofer IIS began collaborating to share expertise.
