The ImagingSource introduced MKU130-10x22 microscope camera
At the end of 2014, The Imaging Source (Bremen, Germany) introduced the DFK MKU130-10x22 microscope camera to the market. This innovative device features a detachable eyepiece and delivers high-quality imaging capabilities compatible with nearly all standard microscopes available today.
A common question arises regarding whether such a ‘universal camera’ is technically feasible, considering that various microscope optical systems typically differ significantly in design—often requiring custom configurations for each specific microscope model. However, this groundbreaking solution challenges conventional approaches by offering adaptability across diverse setups without compromising performance or image quality. Naturally, our team was eager to evaluate this cutting-edge technology firsthand.
The manufacturer generously provided us with a loaner unit for comprehensive testing during the review period.
Basic Technical Specifications
Sensor & Resolution
This camera utilizes a 13-megapixel CMOS color sensor (Sony Exmor 1/2.5-inch format, pixel pitch measuring 1.4 µm × 1.4 µm). It supports multiple resolution settings ranging from the maximum native dimension of 4128×3096 pixels down to options like 1920×1080 (Full HD), ideal for various imaging requirements.
File Formats & Video Capabilities
Captured still images can be saved in formats including Bitmap, TIFF, or JPEG. For video recording, AVI format is supported with maximum frame rates limited by resolution: Full HD at 30 FPS and higher resolutions restricted to just 1 FPS—designed for high-quality but not necessarily fast-motion capture.
Sensitivity & Exposure
The camera offers exposure time control from 1 second up to 1/5000th of a second, while the ISO sensitivity range spans widely—from effectively equivalent ISO 50 to ISO 3200. This wide dynamic adjustment allows flexibility in different lighting conditions and applications.
Color Correction Features
Beyond automatic white balance, users can manually calibrate color profiles for six distinct light sources (e.g., different illumination setups) ensuring accurate representation across varied experimental scenarios.
Software Compatibility & Functionality
Controlled via downloadable software called IC Capture (available on Windows and Linux platforms), the camera provides robust image capture capabilities alongside versatile functionality. This application supports not only photography but also real-time observation through live previews, enhancing its utility for demonstrations or direct microscopic viewing without needing specialized hardware.
To complement these features, an optional measurement software package exists though it was outside the scope of our initial testing phase.
