DirectX Requirement for Windows Vista 64-bit Compatibility
DirectX deployment marks a significant milestone in industrial image processing for Windows Vista 64-bit systems. As one of the pioneers in machine vision, The Imaging Source leveraged DirectX technology to streamline development processes.
This transition was logical due to DirectX’s ability to decouple software from hardware dependencies. Programmers have two primary approaches when accessing cameras:
The traditional method involves direct hardware access (right side of the diagram). While straightforward, this approach creates unstable and unmaintainable code that fails Microsoft certification—making it incompatible with Vista 64-bit.
Alternatively, developers can use DirectX via an operating system-based interface (left side of the diagram). This abstraction layer eliminates the need to understand specific hardware details. Hardware manufacturers benefit too; they only need to provide WDM Stream Class drivers for immediate DirectX compatibility—a requirement for Windows Vista 64-bit certification.
The Imaging Source’s IC Imaging Control SDK simplifies DirectX development, while all their FireWire and USB cameras include compatible WDM Stream Class drivers. For further information, visit our resources section.
