JAI has introduced the “Enhanced Small Form-Factor Pluggable” (SFP+) interface to three high-speed megapixel color line scan cameras within its Sweep and Sweep Plus series. These new models operate on a 10 Gigabit Ethernet network architecture, offering extended connectivity options for industrial imaging applications.

New Model Specifications

The following prism-based and trilinear camera models now feature the SFP+ interface:

  • SW-4000T-SFP: Equipped with three CMOS sensors (3 x 4096 pixels) delivering a maximum line rate of 97 kHz.
  • SW-4000Q-SFP: Features four CMOS sensors (4 x 4096 pixels) for simultaneous R-G-B + NIR imaging at up to 72 kHz line rate.
  • SW-4000TL-SFP: A trilinear color line scan camera with a single CMOS sensor (4096 pixels) achieving up to 66 kHz maximum line rate.

What is SFP+?

The “Enhanced Small Form-Factor Pluggable” (SFP+) interface is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver module designed for high-speed data transmission via optical fiber cables. It enables low-latency and noise-immune communication at very high bandwidths—making it ideal for demanding industrial applications where electromagnetic interference must be avoided.

Key Advantages of SFP+

  • Extended Reach: Supports cable lengths up to 40 km using standard OS2-type optical fiber cables.
  • Low Latency & Noise: Delivers minimal data transmission delay and noise immunity due to its reliance on optical fibers, which are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and system crosstalk.

Connectivity Options with SFP+

All three new camera models support multiple Ethernet standards:

Standard Maximum Cable Length
10GBASE-SR Up to 400 meters
10GBASE-LR Up to 10 km
10GBASE-ER Up to 40 km

These standards utilize different types of optical fiber cables (e.g., OM4 for short-range, OS2 and multimode fibers for long-distance applications) to ensure reliable data transfer across industrial environments.

Flexible Sensor Configuration

The SW-4000T-SFP and SW-4000Q-SFP models offer two user-selectable pixel modes:

  • Mode A (7.5 µm x 7.5 µm): Optimized for high-speed applications requiring fast responsivity.
  • Mode B (7.5 µm x 10.5 µm): Provides better dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for low-light or lower-speed scenarios.

The SW-4000TL-SFP has a fixed pixel size of 7.5 µm × 7.5 µm, while all CMOS sensors support vertical as well as horizontal pixel binning for enhanced flexibility in image processing tasks.

Advanced Color Processing

All cameras include built-in color conversion capabilities:

  • Native HSI (Hue, Saturation, Intensity) or CIEXYZ color output.
  • Support for conversions from standard RGB to sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces, along with user-defined custom RGB matrices.

Additional features like gain adjustment, white balancing, shading correction, and region-of-interest settings further enhance the cameras’ suitability for complex industrial inspection tasks.

Application Examples

These high-speed line scan cameras are ideal for a wide range of industrial automation applications:

  • High-speed print inspection
  • Bottles, labels, and caps inspection
  • Waste sorting (colored plastics and glass)
  • Sheet metal and coin verification
  • Raw stone and granular sorting
  • Food quality control (vegetables, fruits, etc.)
  • Train track and road monitoring
  • Container and robotics inspections
