JAI has unveiled the SP-12401-PGE, a 12.4-megapixel camera within its Spark Series lineup of high-resolution area scan cameras. Available as both monochrome (SP-12401M-PGE) and color (SP-12401C-PGE) models, these devices are built around the Sony Pregius IMX304 CMOS imager. This sensor boasts a 3.45-micron pixel pitch and exceptional low dark noise—less than 2.5 electrons—which ensures superior image quality even in dim conditions.

Interface and Performance

The cameras feature a standard GigE Vision interface that supports data transmission rates up to 9.3 frames per second for full-resolution images, whether they are raw Bayer patterns or 8-bit monochrome formats. Full resolution is achieved at either 4112 x 3008 pixels (monochrome) or slightly lower as 4088 x 3000 pixels (color). The interface also supports Power over GigE Vision, simplifying system design by allowing a single cable for both data and power. Alternatively, users can connect via a separate 12-pin connector.

Compact Design

The SP-12401-PGE line features a new “second-generation” enclosure that is significantly smaller than its predecessors while maintaining the same high shock (80 G) and vibration (10 G) resistance ratings. The overall dimensions are compact: 44 x 44 x 54 mm, which represents more than 50% reduction in volume compared to earlier Spark Series cameras.

Advanced Color Capabilities

The SP-12401C-PGE includes several advanced color imaging features previously only available on JAI’s prism-based systems. These include sophisticated interpolation functions that can operate at either 24-bit or 32-bit depth using a 5 x 5 de-Bayering algorithm. The interpolated output can be delivered in raw RGB format, or the camera can perform conversion to various color spaces including HSI, CIE XYZ, sRGB, Adobe RGB, and custom-defined formats.

Additionally, the SP-12401C-PGE has a built-in function for enhancing specific colors by increasing their intensity up to twice normal levels. This feature supports six primary/complementary color combinations—red/green/blue/cyan/magenta/yellow—and is particularly useful in life sciences applications where contrast between certain elements needs to be emphasized.

Common Features

Both camera models share several powerful features, including support for multiple Regions of Interest (ROI), a burst mode that allows capturing faster sequences than the maximum frame rate, and an edge enhancement function designed to improve image boundaries.

Optics Compatibility

The SP-12401-PGE series supports C-mount lenses compatible with a 1.1-inch optical format. This combination makes them ideal for space-constrained applications across various industries including life sciences and robotics.
