JAI Introduces New Apex Series 3-CMOS Prism-Based Area Scan Cameras
JAI has expanded its lineup with five new Apex Series area scan cameras featuring three CMOS sensors in a prism design. These additions complement the original AP-3200T introduced late in 2017, offering system designers enhanced options for color imaging applications.
Key Features of the New Camera Suite
The advanced suite includes two resolutions and multiple interfaces:
-
Two Resolutions:
- AP-3200T: Provides a total resolution of 3 x 3.2 megapixels (equivalent to 2048 × 1544 pixels per channel).
- AP-1600T: Delivers a combined resolution of 3 x 1.6 megapixels (approximately 1456 × 1088 pixels per channel).
-
Three Interfaces:
Both models support Camera Link, GigE Vision, and USB3 Vision for flexible integration. -
High Frame Rates:
The AP-1600T can capture up to 126 fps over Camera Link (for the 1.6-megapixel resolution), while the AP-3200T achieves a maximum of 55 fps via the same interface.
These cameras are designed for display at Vision 2018 and represent JAI’s latest advancements in three-sensor prism technology, enabling superior color accuracy and spatial precision.
Technical Specifications
The new models utilize Sony Pregius™ CMOS imagers:
-
AP-3200T Series: Based on the IMX265 1/1.8" sensor with a pixel size of 3.45 microns.
- AP-3200T-PGE: Outputs 3.2 megapixels at 12 fps over GigE Vision.
- AP-3200T-PMCL: Provides the same resolution but operates at 55 fps via Camera Link.
-
AP-1600T Series: Employs the IMX273 1/2.9" sensor with identical pixel dimensions (3.45 microns).
- AP-1600T-PGE: Delivers 1.6 megapixels at 24 fps over GigE Vision.
- AP-1600T-USB: Outputs the resolution via USB3 Vision at a faster rate of 78 fps.
- AP-1600T-PMCL: Supports up to 126 fps for high-speed applications.
Advanced Features
The cameras incorporate several tools designed for complex color imaging tasks:
- Color Space Conversion: Includes on-board support for RGB-to-HSI, RGB-to-CIE-XYZ transformations (compatible with sRGB and Adobe RGB).
- Independent Gain/Exposure Control: Red, green, and blue channels can be adjusted separately to optimize dynamic range.
- Color Enhancer Tool: Allows selective amplification of specific colors useful in microscopy or medical imaging.
- Additional capabilities include multi-region-of-interest (ROI) support, edge enhancement, auto-light compensation (ALC), color pixel binning, and chunk data transmission.
The compact prism design reduces the size by more than 50% and weight by nearly half compared to previous models while maintaining higher resolution. These cameras feature a robust build with a shock rating of 50G and vibration tolerance up to 3G, operating reliably in environments ranging from -5°C to +45°C.
Ideal Applications
The new series supports demanding industrial use cases such as paint matching for automotive applications or gemstone sorting based on subtle color variations.
Industrial Application Areas
Ideal use cases include:
- Print inspection (packaging, labels).
- Medical imaging (microscopy, eye diagnostics, digital pathology).
- Pharmaceutical verification and automated quality control in industries like automotive manufacturing, food inspection, mining, LED calibration, packaging, and more.
