In this interview, we speak with Stefan Waizmann, who has been lending his technical expertise to the marketing department since April. His responsibilities range from manuals and reference reports to articles, ensuring all content is of impeccable quality.

Career Aspirations

As a child, Stefan dreamed of becoming an astronaut and exploring the stars. However, modern spacecraft still fall short of reaching distant destinations.

Transition into Photo Engineering

Stefan initially trained as a banker but always felt drawn to photo engineering. After completing his training—despite some misalignment with his physics background—he decided to pivot and became an engineer 25 years ago.

Role at SVS-Vistek

In his current position, Stefan supports the marketing department by providing insights from his experience as a customer, engineer, and product manager. His goal is to ensure that the company’s messaging effectively reaches its target audience.

Current Projects

Stefan is currently updating camera manuals and writing an article about burst mode functionality in cameras.

Motivation for Marketing Role

Having worked extensively in technical support and product development, Stefan was drawn to marketing because it allows engagement with diverse customers while staying attuned to industry trends. He finds customer interactions exciting and satisfying.

Favorite Aspects of His Job

While he misses the hands-on engineering work from his former role, Stefan now enjoys listening to customer feedback as part of a two-way communication process. Marketing keeps him connected to current trends in an engaging way.

Stefan identifies several emerging trends: deep learning simplifying inspection tasks and enabling new applications; increased standardization in hardware components for image processing; and automation becoming more integrated into industrial standards.

Camera Preferences

A long-time Nikon user since his teenage years, Stefan primarily uses the D90. However, he admits that availability often trumps technical perfection—his iPhone frequently serves as his go-to camera when needed.

Favorite Photographs

Stefan particularly enjoys portraits, including a striking black-and-white photograph of a mime performer and an image of an Afghan man smoking opium.

Personal Interests

Beyond work, Stefan balances engineering with electronics projects at home. He also pursues hobbies like hang gliding and mountain hiking—a passion shared by his Bavarian surroundings and family life.

Summer Vacation Tips

Stefan recommends embracing the Bavarian summer through outdoor activities: cycling, hiking, and hang gliding—free from traffic stressors or digital overload.

Photography Habits on Vacation

While Stefan tends to over-photodocument vacations, he consistently reduces his personal photo collection down to fewer than 100 images shortly after returning home.
