Snappy Wide: A New Era in Logistics Imaging with the 8K CMOS Image Sensor
Grenoble, FRANCE — June 13, 2023
Teledyne e2v, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies (NYSE: TDY), today announced the launch of Snappy Wide, an innovative 8K wide aspect ratio CMOS image sensor designed for logistics applications. This new sensor addresses the growing need for larger conveyor belts in modern logistics systems by providing a single-sensor solution that replaces multiple traditional sensors, offering greater efficiency and cost savings.
Key Features
Snappy Wide boasts a compact 2.5 µm global shutter pixel size, leveraging Teledyne e2v’s cutting-edge light pipe technology to deliver an impressive dynamic range of 67 dB in both 10-bit and 12-bit ADC modes. The sensor is engineered for superior barcode reading performance with low read-out noise—a critical factor in high-speed logistics environments—and excellent MTF (modulation transfer function) across various lighting conditions. Additionally, its low dark current ensures pristine image quality even in dimly lit settings.
The sensor supports resolutions up to 8K (8,192 × 4,320 pixels), corresponding to a 17:9 aspect ratio, making it ideal for logistics and industrial applications such as smart factories.
Versatility and Customization
Snappy Wide is available in three resolution options—35 Megapixels (8,192 × 4,320), 28 Megapixels (8,182 × 3,500), and 16 Megapixels (8,192 × 2,000)—with flexible configurations for horizontal and vertical resolutions. Unlike traditional square-format sensors, Snappy Wide eliminates wasted pixels, leading to a more cost-effective system design.
The sensor can also function as an effective high-throughput 1D linear scanner, achieving up to 18,700 fps in dual-line scanning mode—a significant advantage for automated sorting and inspection systems.
Industry Impact
Arnaud Foucher, Business Team Leader at Teledyne e2v, emphasized the sensor’s adaptability: “Snappy Wide empowers customers to customize resolution, frame rates, performance metrics, and pricing to suit their specific needs. The logistics industry has particularly embraced this innovation for its ability to enhance barcode scanning precision and enable high-speed linear scanning in bustling warehouse environments.”
Availability and Support
Snappy Wide is now available in black-and-white and color variants. For documentation, samples, or evaluation kits, please contact Teledyne e2v directly.
For a live demonstration of Snappy Wide, visit the Teledyne e2v booth (B5.210) at Automatica 2023 in Munich from June 27 to 30.
