Teledyne e2v Introduces Compact Topaz CMOS Sensors For Mobile And IoT Applications
September 14, 2021
New Topaz Sensors Ideal for Mobile Applications: Compact Design with High Performance
Teledyne e2v, a division of Teledyne Technologies (NYSE: TDY), has introduced two new members to its Topaz series of industrial CMOS sensors. These 2MP and 1.5MP resolution devices feature the standard 1920 x 1080 pixel format alongside an innovative 1920 x 800-pixel setup, combining cutting-edge low-noise global-shutter technology with compact design to enable high-performance applications in mobile platforms.
The sensors are housed within a small 4.45 mm wide CSP (Chip Scale Package), aligning their optical center with the mechanical center for an ultra-slim camera profile. This attribute makes them well-suited for space-constrained systems like miniature barcode engines, compact mobile terminals and IoT devices, wearable tech, drones, and robotics.
Key Specifications
- Pixel Technology: 2.5µm global shutter pixels using in-pixel CDS (correlated double sampling) and dual light-guides
- Resolution Options: 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 800 pixel formats
- Light Performance: Maintains excellent SNR even at low-light levels with minimal crosstalk for clear imaging
Quote from Gareth Powell, Teledyne e2v CMOS Sensors Marketing Manager
“The new Topaz sensors were designed to provide an unbeatable cost-to-performance ratio for industrial applications requiring high volume adoption. Their compact size makes them ideal for driving the world’s smallest barcode engines and enabling ultra-thin mobile designs.”
Performance Metrics
- Readout Noise: Typically 3.3 electrons
- Low-Light Capability: Short exposure times maintain excellent SNR
- High-Temperature Operation: Optimized dark signal management ensures reliability under demanding conditions
- Frame Rate: >100 fps in standard output mode
- Interface: Dual MIPI lanes capable of transmitting 1.2Gpix/sec each
Power Efficiency
The sensors feature a rapid Wake-Up mode enabling image capture within just 10 milliseconds after power activation.
