Affordable Tetra Line Scan Sensors Bring 2K and 4K Imaging to Industry
Tetra: A Low-Cost, High-Performance CMOS Sensor Family for Machine Vision Applications
Grenoble, France – On June 29, 2021, Teledyne e2v, a company within the Teledyne Technologies group (NYSE: TDY), announced the launch of the Tetra sensor family. These sensors are designed to deliver high performance at an affordable price, making them suitable for machine vision applications such as food sorting, recycling, logistics, pick-and-place operations, and document scanning.
Key Specifications
-
Resolution Options: Available in 2K or 4K configurations.
- 2K resolution features a pixel size of 14 μm x 14 μm.
- 4K resolution offers smaller pixels at 7 μm x 7 μm, with a maximum line rate of 128kHz aggregate.
-
Output Flexibility:
- Mono models can be configured to output one, two, or four rows.
- Color models provide RGB and mono outputs, while wafer-level coated dichroic filters enable spectrally independent RGB and NIR outputs for multispectral imaging.
Technical Highlights
The Tetra sensors incorporate a synchronized shutter design with low read noise and high dynamic range. They utilize true correlated double sampling (CDS), where each channel has its own exposure control, simplifying white balancing. The ceramic LCC package ensures reliable performance across wide temperature ranges, while the sensor data ports offer high signal integrity for seamless system integration.
Industry Impact
Florian Julien, Director of Teledyne e2v’s Machine Vision Team, emphasized that the sorting industry is transitioning from traditional color imaging to multispectral solutions. “Tetra was specifically designed with unique RGB + NIR capabilities to serve as next-generation technology,” he noted, highlighting its potential to improve quality and safety in food sorting.
