Flash CMOS Image Sensors: Revolutionizing 3D Laser Profiling and Inspection
Introduction
On September 3, 2019, Teledyne e2v—a company within the Teledyne Technologies group—announced a new addition to its Flash CMOS image sensor family. These sensors are specifically designed for high-speed, high-resolution 3D laser profiling and displacement applications. Tailored to meet the demands of modern industrial inspection systems, these sensors combine cutting-edge technology with practical design features.
Key Features
The new Flash CMOS sensors boast a 6µm CMOS global shutter pixel, enabling both high resolution and fast frame rates. They are available in two resolutions:
- 4K horizontal resolution at 1800fps (with an 8-bit output)
- 2K horizontal resolution at 1500fps
These sensors also feature exceptional readout speeds—61.4Gbps for the 4K model and 25.6Gbps for the 2K model—making them stand out in terms of Gbps/price ratio.
Physical Design
The sensors are housed in a µPGA ceramic package, compatible with standard optical formats. For optimal performance, they utilize APS-like optics for the 4K resolution and C-Mount for the 2K resolution.
Application-Specific Features
To address real-world challenges, these sensors include several advanced features:
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) modes up to 100dB, allowing measurements of both highly reflective surfaces and dark areas in a single image.
- Multiple Region of Interest (ROI) modes for balancing profiling speed with range and resolution during height measurement.
- The ability to make “hot” parameter changes between frames—including exposure time, binning, ROI adjustments, flipping, and conversion timing—facilitating real-time adaptation to varying conditions.
- Flexible trigger modes tailored to different production line speeds.
Customization Options
Customers can further differentiate these sensors by selecting from a range of derivatives at the sensor level. These include:
- Multiple operating modes that balance frame rate, power consumption, and bit depth.
- Horizontal binning for increased frame rates.
- The capability to meet specific Scheimpflug angle requirements.
Industry Impact
Teledyne e2v’s Marketing Manager for 3D applications emphasized the sensors’ unique features: high resolution, ultra-fast frame rates, HDR capabilities, and a suite of additional functionalities—all tailored to address complex demands in 3D laser profiling. These attributes make them ideal for quality control systems and precise 3D measurements.
Availability
Evaluation kits and sample units for both Flash 2K and Flash 4K sensors are now available. For more details, visit the product page or contact Teledyne e2v directly.
