On September 5th, 2018, Teledyne e2v, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies and a global leader in imaging solutions, announced that its Emerald 12M and 16M CMOS image sensors are now available for mass production and high-volume purchase. These sensors are designed for optical inspection and factory automation applications.

Key Features of the Sensors

The Emerald 12M and 16M sensors belong to Teledyne e2v’s Emerald family, featuring a small 2.8µm low-noise global shutter pixel. They are manufactured using a 110nm wafer process from TowerJazz, a global leader in specialty foundry services, produced at their facility in Arai, Japan. This advanced pixel architecture delivers cutting-edge performance while reducing overall camera costs due to the smaller optical format.

These sensors offer customers unprecedented features, including support for high-speed interfaces such as USB 3.1 gen.2, 10GigE, and Camera Link. Notable capabilities include HDR modes with up to 120dB dynamic range and a unique ROI mode that enables multiple images to be captured under different exposure conditions in a single high-resolution shot.

Both sensors share the same CLGA package, optical center, readout structure, and processing architecture. They are available in two speed grades—standard and high-speed—which, combined with their pin-to-pin and register compatibilities, provide camera designers with the flexibility to balance resolution and speed within a single camera system.

Industry Impact and Collaboration

Rafael Romay, Vice President of Professional Imaging at Teledyne e2v, expressed excitement about the mass production milestone: “It’s rewarding to see the Emerald 12M and 16M sensors, the original members of our family, enter full-scale manufacturing. Their popularity among machine vision customers stems from their exceptional performance and innovative features. We’ve also expanded this successful lineup with the Emerald 67M sensor, offering even higher resolution without compromising speed.”

Dr. Avi Strum, Senior Vice President and General Manager of TowerJazz’s CMOS Image Sensor Business Unit, emphasized the partnership: “For over a decade, our collaboration with Teledyne e2v has yielded groundbreaking industrial sensors. The Emerald family represents our latest advancement in global shutter technology at 110nm, featuring a state-of-the-art 2.8µm pixel size. We’re eager to continue this collaboration as machine vision demands grow.”
