Teledyne e2v has introduced the OctoPlus range of line scan cameras for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) applications in healthcare and industrial markets. This new development is expected to significantly impact ophthalmic OCT by reducing patient examination times and expanding the field of view available during non-invasive eye examinations.

The OctoPlus system was developed through collaborations with medical professionals, incorporating a novel pixel architecture tailored for precise imaging of retinal and corneal structures. It enables detailed mapping of tissue anatomy, accurate measurement of thickness, and visualization of blood flow dynamics to support diagnostics.

This advancement benefits patients by improving comfort during eye tests and reducing examination duration. For doctors, OctoPlus doubles the captured field of view without compromising resolution, enhancing diagnostic confidence and enabling earlier detection of conditions like diabetic retinopathy through OCT angiography. Equipment manufacturers can also leverage this technology for more effective treatment decisions based on OCT imaging.

OctoPlus offers several key advantages: a 250% larger field of view compared to FDA-approved commercial Swept Source OCT (SS-OCT) systems, and an improved signal-to-noise ratio (+5dB) over available Spectral-Domain OCT (SD-OCT) equipment. Additionally, it reduces power consumption by approximately 60%, lowering heat generation and extending maintenance intervals for OCT devices.

François Thouret, President of Professional Imaging at Teledyne e2v, noted that OctoPlus represents a significant step forward in functional imaging for OCT applications. The technology will expand access to advanced eye examinations within the next year and pave the way for innovations targeting emerging medical fields such as neurology and dermatology.

The introduction of OctoPlus follows the release of Teledyne e2v’s ADQ14OCT, a groundbreaking 14-bit digitizer designed specifically for high-speed SS-OCT imaging with deep penetration capabilities.
