On October 24th, 2016, e2v unveiled its groundbreaking Emerald family of CMOS image sensors, marking a significant milestone in the industry. These innovative sensors feature the world’s smallest true global shutter pixel available today—just 2.8µm—in an optical format that enables higher resolutions and improved system performance at reduced costs.

The new generation sensors represent a substantial improvement in Dark Signal Non Uniformity (DSNU), which has been enhanced by a factor of ten compared to other CMOS products on the market. This advancement allows cameras to operate effectively even at high temperatures, making long exposures possible in low-light conditions—ideal for applications such as microscopes or surveillance systems.

The Emerald family includes three resolution options: 16MP (4096 x 4096), 12MP (4096 x 3072), and 8MP (4096 x 2160). These formats are among the first to feature a one-inch optical design compatible with compact C-Mount lenses, making them highly suitable for industrial applications.

All sensors in this family share the same pixel structure, processing architecture, readout technology, and ceramic Land Grid Array (LGA) packaging. This uniformity simplifies integration efforts and helps reduce development costs for camera manufacturers. Additional embedded features include High Dynamic Range modes, configurable ADCs with 8/10/12 bit support, adjustable high-speed outputs capable of reaching 60fps at 10 bits while maintaining full resolution, as well as power-saving modes.

e2v achieved these innovations by working closely with customers to understand their evolving needs within the machine vision market. Marketing Manager Gareth Powell stated: “Emerald sensors combine advanced CMOS processing technology with a low-noise global shutter pixel designed specifically for demanding industrial applications.” He emphasized key performance metrics including quantum efficiency exceeding 65%, full well capacity over 7ke, typical temporal noise at approximately 4e-, and an optional low-noise mode delivering around 2e-.

These sensors will be demonstrated at the Vision Stuttgart 2016 exhibition. Interested parties should contact e2v prior to the event to schedule technology demonstrations.
