Thierry Ligozat Highlights Vision Sensor Innovations for Smart Cities at APAC Innovation Summit 2017
Thierry Ligozat, Chief Innovation Officer at Teledyne e2v, delivered the keynote speech at the APAC Innovation Summit 2017 – “Smart City. Connected City.” His presentation focused on “Image and Vision Sensors, Systems and Applications for Smart Cities.”
From September 7-8, a two-day conference organized jointly by the APAC Innovation Summit and Hong Kong Science Park centered on how technology can drive transformation at both city and regional levels. The event explored the Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong and discussed smart, resilient planning in neighboring countries.
In his keynote address, Thierry outlined how smart cities will rely on advanced image and vision sensor technology to collect and interpret visual data, aiding decision-making processes to enhance connectivity, intelligence, and productivity. He provided examples of potential smart city applications, including intelligent public lighting, traffic management systems, industrial safety solutions, transportation safety initiatives, and medical uses.
Thierry explained the components of vision systems, which typically include an optical element, a sensor, electronic controls, image processing capabilities, and sometimes dedicated lighting systems. He then presented Teledyne e2v’s CMOS sensor technology, which offers direct sensing across beyond-visible-light spectrums—from Ultraviolet (UV) to Near Infrared (NIR)—for applications like night vision or medical imaging.
This innovative technology enables daytime or nighttime image acquisition with a wide field of view while maintaining the ability to capture fine details such as vehicle license plates. CMOS sensors also provide state-of-the-art 3D vision, allowing users to add depth perception to data sets for improved accuracy and robustness against false detections.
